A premium midsize sedan, the Acura TLX is sized like an Audi A6 or BMW 5-Series but it costs more like the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4.
We’re not fans of its touchpad-based infotainment interface, but the 2024 Acura TLX appeals for its value, ride and handling, and plentiful features. It garners a TCC Rating of 7.0 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
For 2024, Acura drops the base model and makes the former Technology Package equipment standard. The car also gets tweaked styling, larger interior screens, a quieter cabin, and improved safety features.
The exterior changes are minor. Every model now gets a frameless version of the brand’s five-sided grille and it features a new diamond mesh pattern. That goes with an angular and sleek design that doesn’t give away the TLX’s front-drive-based platform. The rear end echoes the look of the nose, and the whole car has a sleek, sporty look.
Inside, the TLX now features 12.3-inch screens for both the digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen. The center stack and center console are replete with buttons that create an airplane-cockpit look.
The base TLX is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-4 that makes 272 hp. It’s quick and fairly efficient with EPA ratings of 25 mpg combined. It comes with front- or all-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The TLX Type S draws upon a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that ups the output to 355 hp and can launch from 0-60 mph in about five seconds. It comes only with all-wheel drive.
While its front-drive roots mean the TLX will never be confused with a BMW M3 in the handling department, it is fun to drive and agile. It’s balanced through corners and rides well in any form. The Type S increases the fun, but doesn’t have what it takes to be a track car.
A large greenhouse gives the TLX a roomy cabin, highlighted by comfortable and supportive front seats. The rear seat also offers good room for adults, though the trunk is on the small side.
Safety is a TLX strength, with good crash-test scores and lots of standard safety equipment made even better with new sensors and additional features this year.
